Early Life
Born Kenneth Arnold Chesney on March 26, 1968, in Knoxville, Tennessee, and raised in the small East Tennessee town of Luttrell, the home of guitar legend Chet Atkins, he grew up the son of a former elementary school teacher and a hairstylist, with sports rather than music dominating his childhood as a standout football and baseball player at Gibbs High School. Music was always quietly present even so, with Chesney watching bluegrass with his grandparents on the local morning show The Cas Walker Show and attending life-changing concerts by Conway Twitty, George Jones, and Merle Haggard, until receiving a guitar as a Christmas gift during his sophomore year at East Tennessee State University finally sparked a serious interest in performing.

After joining ETSU's celebrated bluegrass band and earning his first paid gig at Chucky's Trading Post for $15 a night plus free enchiladas, Chesney graduated with a degree in advertising in 1990 and moved to Nashville, where he became the resident performer at The Turf, a rough honky-tonk bar in the city's historic district, before landing a songwriting contract with Opryland Music Group in 1992 and a deal with Capricorn Records the following year.
