From High School Classmates To #1 Hit
Long before they were selling out arenas and collecting trophies in Nashville, Kane Brown and Lauren Alaina were just two kids sitting in a choir room in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. Their journey from a small town middle school to the top of the country charts is one of the most unique full-circle moments in the history of the genre.
The Choir Room Spark
The story begins at Lakeview Middle School where Lauren Alaina was already a local powerhouse. She was the one who noticed a shy kid in the back named Kane Brown humming along to the music. Lauren famously pushed him to step out of his shell and sing out loud for the teacher. That small nudge from a classmate would eventually change the course of country music history, but their paths were about to go in very different directions.
The Idol Success and the Idol Rejection
Lauren Alaina’s rise was meteoric. In 2011 she became a household name as the runner-up on the tenth season of American Idol. While she was touring the country and signing her first record deal, Kane Brown was still trying to find his footing.
Kane actually tried to follow in Lauren’s footsteps by auditioning for American Idol himself, but he was rejected by the producers. He later tried out for The X Factor and made it through the initial rounds, but he ultimately walked away from the show when the producers tried to force him into a boy band. It seemed like the reality TV path was closed to him, so he went back to Georgia and started posting raw videos of himself singing covers on Facebook.
The Viral Pivot
While Lauren was navigating the traditional Nashville machine, Kane was building a digital empire from his bedroom. His deep voice and authentic style resonated with a massive audience that the industry had largely ignored. His covers went viral and earned him millions of views, which eventually forced Nashville to pay attention. By the time he signed his major label deal, he had more momentum than almost any newcomer in the city.
What Ifs and the Full Circle Moment
In 2016 their paths finally crossed again in a professional recording studio. Kane was working on his debut self-titled album and he had a song called What Ifs that needed a powerhouse female vocal. He called his old high school friend Lauren Alaina to join him on the track.
The chemistry was undeniable because the history was real. The song exploded onto the charts and eventually climbed all the way to number one on the Billboard Country Airplay chart. It was a career-defining moment for both of them. For Lauren it was a reminder of the talent she saw in that quiet kid in Georgia, and for Kane it was the ultimate validation after his early rejections.
