The American Music Awards gave country music fans another double-take, following the Grammys earlier this year.
Beyoncé took home the trophy for Female Country Artist. Her album, Cowboy Carter, also snagged the award for Country Album. Now, if you're a true country music purist, you might be feeling a bit of déjà vu – or perhaps a mild tremor of outrage. Following her controversial Grammy wins, Queen Bey's continued domination in the country categories has some fans scratching their heads, wondering if the genre's boundaries are being stretched thinner than a one-string guitar.
Post Malone lassoed the award for Male Country Artist, and his collaboration with Morgan Wallen, "I Had Some Help," earned the title of Country Song. Country fans found this easier to swallow given Posty’s strong move into the sector with collaborations including some of the biggest stars. He unveiled his F-1 Trillion album at the famed Grand Ole Opry as well, further paying homage to country music.
Let's also hear it for the consistently excellent Dan + Shay, who once again proved their staying power by winning Country Duo or Group.
The AMA show did give fans strong performances by country superstars Blake Shelton and Lainey Wilson, but they will be losing the country audience if they can’t find award winners that the fans believe are true to the genre.
