Early Life
Raised just outside Atlanta, Slater Nalley grew up attending The Lovett School from kindergarten through senior year and found his footing not on the sports field but in the school's theatre program, playing the Big Bad Wolf in Into the Woods and Willy Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory while his peers were focused on athletics, an experience he has described as often making him feel like an outcast before music gave him a clear sense of purpose. He taught himself guitar chords on YouTube at 14, learned piano by ear alongside it, was writing original songs by 13, attended a songwriting camp at C Lazy U Ranch in Colorado in 2023, and spent summers on Michigan's Leelanau Peninsula working at Dune Bird Winery, with his life experiences including what he has obliquely described as "tough times many peers don't know about" shaping the honest, emotionally direct storytelling that defines his music.
Career Highlights
After a Tyler Childers cover he posted on TikTok accumulated over 5.3 million views and caught the attention of Dallas Davidson's Play It Again Music, Nalley signed a management deal in 2024 and auditioned for American Idol Season 23 in Nashville with "Traces of You," an original song he wrote after his high school English teacher Michele Davis shared a poem she had written about the 2016 murder of her teenage son Carter and his friend Natalie Henderson outside an Atlanta Publix, a song so emotionally devastating that it moved judge Carrie Underwood to tears and captivated the entire audition room.
