Early Life
Raised on her family's farm in Checotah, Oklahoma, Carrie Underwood began singing at her local First Free Will Baptist Church and competed in the Robbins Memorial Talent Show as a child, while also staying active in high school as an Honor Society member who played basketball and softball. A lifelong animal lover, she became a vegetarian at age 13 after developing a bond with the farm animals around her.
Career Highlights
At 14, Underwood briefly landed a deal with Capitol Records in Nashville, but the contract fell through due to a management change at the label, sending her back to performing at local fairs, community events, and church. She interrupted her senior year at Northeastern State University in 2004 to audition for the fourth season of American Idol, won the competition in 2005, and signed with 19 Recordings/Arista Records. Her debut single "Inside Your Heaven" made her the first-ever country artist to debut at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and her first album, Some Hearts (2005), became the best-selling debut album of all time by a solo female country artist, earning her three Grammys including Best New Artist; she went on to be inducted into the Grand Ole Opry by Garth Brooks in 2008 and has since collected eight Grammy Awards, 12 Billboard Music Awards, and seven Guinness World Records.
Family & Personal Life
Underwood met Canadian former NHL hockey player Mike Fisher backstage at one of her concerts in 2008 and the two married on July 10, 2010. Their older son, Isaiah Michael Fisher, was born February 27, 2015, and their younger son, Jacob Bryan Fisher, was born January 21, 2019. Jacob's arrival came after the couple endured three miscarriages, a journey they later shared publicly in their documentary series.
