Second cousins Gary LeVox and Jay DeMarcus grew up in Columbus, Ohio, in a musical family before LeVox left his job with the Ohio Department of Mental Retardation to join DeMarcus in Nashville.

The group formed in 1999 after Jay DeMarcus and Gary LeVox moved to Nashville in the 1990s and recruited Joe Don Rooney during a club performance.
