Early Life
Born Audrey Faith Perry on September 21, 1967, in Ridgeland, Mississippi, Hill was adopted just two days after birth by Ted and Edna Perry and raised in the tiny town of Star, 20 miles southeast of Jackson, in a devout Baptist household where she began singing in church at age three and gave her first public performance at a 4-H Club luncheon at age seven. As the only member of her adoptive family drawn deeply to music, Hill sometimes felt like an outsider, singing along to records by Tammy Wynette, Elvis Presley, Reba McEntire, and Aretha Franklin in her bedroom, and in 1976 attended an Elvis Presley concert at the Mississippi State Fair Coliseum that left a permanent impression before she eventually dropped out of junior college and headed to Nashville at age 19 to pursue music.

After two years of struggle in Nashville that Hill has described as feeling completely lost, she signed with Warner Bros. Records and released her debut single "Wild One" in 1993, which became the first country single by a female artist to hold number one on Billboard's country chart for four consecutive weeks, helping her debut album "Take Me as I Am" go double platinum. Hill was first married to music executive Daniel Hill in the late 1980s, a marriage that ended in divorce in 1994 during the same emotionally intense period when she was searching for and finally meeting her biological mother Paula Conway, a professional painter whose creative spirit immediately helped Hill understand why she had always felt different from her adoptive family.
