Why Zach Bryan Left the Navy for a Global Country Music Career
By: Brian Zwerner
Zach Bryan is currently selling out stadiums and winning Grammys but his journey to the top began in a far more disciplined environment. Born into a Navy family in Japan and raised in Oologah, Oklahoma, Zach followed the family tradition by enlisting in the Navy at only seventeen years old. While his parents and grandfather had served with distinction Zach spent his downtime in the military barracks writing raw songs and practicing guitar.
From the Barracks to the Internet
The early days of his career were about as grassroots as it gets. While still serving in the Navy Zach began uploading simple videos recorded on his iPhone to YouTube. One of those videos was for his original song Heading South which went viral in 2019 and changed his life forever. He recorded his first two albums in unconventional spaces like Airbnbs and barns while balancing his military duties.
The Honorable Discharge and Major Label Success
By 2021 the momentum was impossible to ignore. Zach received an honorable discharge from the Navy to pursue music full time and signed a major deal with Warner Records. His major label debut was a massive thirty four track project titled American Heartbreak. That album featured the diamond certified streaming hit Something in the Orange which solidified his status as a legitimate superstar.
Stadium Tours and Recent Milestones
The success has only grown since then. Zach won a Grammy in 2024 for I Remember Everything and released his latest album With Heaven on Top in January of 2026. The new record debuted at number one and launched his largest international stadium tour to date. The With Heaven on Tour kicked off on March 7 in St. Louis and includes upcoming stadium dates in Tampa, Charlotte, and Cleveland. He is currently performing a career spanning setlist with support from diverse acts like Kings of Leon, Caamp, and Alabama Shakes while often ending his shows with a seventeen minute version of his anthem Revival.
New Chapters in His Personal Life
His personal life has also been a whirlwind recently. On New Year’s Eve in 2025 Zach married Samantha Leonard following a five month romance. This marriage came shortly after his high profile split from podcaster Brianna LaPaglia. While he was previously married to Rose Madden from 2020 to 2021 he does not have any children.
