Rings, Rings, and More Rings: Country Stars With the Most Marriages
By: Brian Zwerner
Country music has always been honest about love, heartbreak, and second chances. Some of its biggest stars have taken that philosophy to an extreme. Here is a look at the country artists who have said "I do" more times than most people would dare, with enough love stories and lessons in between to fill a jukebox.
Tied for Third Place: Willie Nelson (4 Marriages)
At 92 years old, Willie Nelson has lived enough lives for ten people. He has also been married four times. The Grammy winner has been married to Martha Matthews, Shirley Collie, Connie Koepke, and his current wife Annie D'Angelo, and has been candid about his track record. "I'm not easy to live with," he told Parade in 2010. "I've been used to doing things my own way for so long that I'm not interested in any suggestions." He and Annie married on September 16, 1991, and their relationship has proven to be his longest by a long shot. When asked in 2012 if Annie was the real love of his life, Willie responded, "Well, for the moment she is," and laughed. Still Willie. Still on the road. Still married. At 92, there is probably still time.
Tied for Second Place: Kenny Rogers, Merle Haggard, and Tammy Wynette (5 Marriages Each)
Three of country music's most iconic names all share the same number on this list, and each has a different story to tell about why.
Kenny Rogers married five times and blamed his career for most of the heartbreak. "Music, at least for me, is like a mistress, and she's a difficult mistress for a wife to compete with," he told Reuters in 2012. His five marriages included Janice Gordon, Jean Rogers, Margo Anderson, Marianne Gordon, and finally Wanda Miller, whom he called "my soul mate" and to whom he remained married until his death in 2020. He summed it up with his trademark humor: "You can't say I'm afraid of commitment. I've been married five times."
Merle Haggard married Leona Hobbs, Bonnie Owens, Leona Williams, Debbie Parret, and finally Theresa Ann Lane, to whom he was married for 23 years until his death in 2016. He once said that marrying Theresa was the best decision he ever made. His ex-wife Bonnie Owens stayed on as his backup singer even after their divorce, which is either a testament to their friendship or to how complicated country music marriages can get.
Tammy Wynette was married five times: to Euple Byrd, Don Chapel, George Jones, Michael Tomlin, and finally George Richey. Her marriage to Michael Tomlin in 1976 lasted just six weeks. Her most famous marriage, to George Jones, produced some of the most beloved duets in country history before ending in divorce in 1975. Her daughter Georgette later revealed that weeks before Wynette's death in 1998, she told her daughter that George Jones would always be the love of her life. Sometimes country songs write themselves.
The Undisputed Champion: Lorrie Morgan (6 Marriages)
Nobody on this list comes close to Lorrie Morgan, who has walked down the aisle six times across five decades. In order, her husbands were Ron Gaddis, Keith Whitley, Brad Thompson, Jon Randall, Sammy Kershaw, and Randy White. She was only 20 years old at her first marriage, to George Jones band musician Ron Gaddis in 1979.
Her most heartbreaking chapter came with husband number two. Her 1986 marriage to fellow country star Keith Whitley was cut short in 1989 when Whitley died of alcohol poisoning, leaving Lorrie a widow at 30 with their son, Jesse Keith Whitley. She kept going, as she always has. After marriages to bus driver Brad Thompson, singer Jon Randall, and fellow country star Sammy Kershaw, she married Randy White in 2010, and for nearly fifteen years he was the anchor in her life. Sadly, Randy passed away in April 2025 after a battle with mouth cancer, with Lorrie by his side until the end.
Six husbands. Six chapters. And through it all, one of the most distinctive voices in country music history. Lorrie Morgan has lived and loved in a way that would make a great song, which is probably why she has always known exactly how to sing one.
