Country Music's Longest Running Marriages: Counting Up to Nearly Six Decades of Love

Country music has written more breakup songs than any genre in history. Funny, then, that some of its biggest stars have quietly built marriages that have outlasted nearly everyone's expectations. Here is a countdown of three of the longest running marriages in country music, starting with the youngest and building all the way to a love story now closing in on sixty years.

46 Years: Alan and Denise

Alan Jackson and Denise met in 1976 while attending Newnan High School in Georgia, where she was a cheerleader, tennis player, and top student. They dated for three years before marrying on December 15, 1979. Alan did not have a record deal, a Nashville address, or any real plan beyond the dream when he sang to her at the wedding.

They moved to Nashville eventually, where Alan worked the mailroom at The Nashville Network by day and played honky tonks by night, while Denise took a job as a flight attendant. While working a flight, Denise ran into Glen Campbell, told him about her talented husband, and Campbell handed her the business card of his manager. That connection launched his career. 54 Years: George and Norma

George Strait and Norma Voss grew up together in Pearsall, Texas, dated briefly in high school, lost touch, and then reconnected when George had an epiphany. "Norma was the first girl I ever loved," he has said. "One day, I thought, 'I'm missing the boat here,' and we started dating again."

The two eloped in Mexico on December 4, 1971, when they were both nineteen, then held a small church ceremony back home in Pearsall. They have weathered profound tragedy together. The couple lost their thirteen-year-old daughter Jenifer in a car accident in June 1986, a loss they have navigated with extraordinary dignity and privacy, establishing the Jenifer Strait Memorial Foundation in her honor. 59 Years: Barbara and Ken

At fourteen, Barbara Mandrell joined her family band, where she fell in love with the band's drummer, Ken Dudney, who eventually left to become a Navy pilot. The couple first met when Barbara's father hired Ken as the drummer for the Mandrell Family Band. She was fourteen, Ken was twenty-one, and both fell hard immediately, despite the complication that Ken was engaged to someone else at the time. He broke off that engagement, and four years later the two married on May 28, 1967.

The marriage has survived more than its fair share of tests, including long stretches of separation during Ken's military service and Barbara's intense touring career, as well as a devastating car accident in 1984 that left Barbara with a severe brain injury and forced her to step away from performing for years while she recovered, with Ken by her side throughout.

"There are times when Ken and I would like to put each other through a wall," Barbara admitted candidly. "It happens, but we married for forever, and keeping God at the center of our lives has made it work and made it blessed and happy. Ken and I both are outgoing people. We're yellers and screamers. But we're also passionate at making up."

Fifty-nine years later, the Sweetheart of Steel and her Navy pilot are still going strong, proof that the loudest fights can still belong to the strongest marriages.
