First Love, Last Love: Three Country Stars Who Married Their High School Sweethearts

In a genre full of heartbreak songs, these three men wrote a different kind of story. Thomas Rhett, Alan Jackson, and George Strait all found their forever person before they ever set foot on a stage, and the love stories they built along the way are as good as anything they have ever recorded.

Thomas Rhett and Lauren: From First Grade to Forever

Thomas Rhett and Lauren Akins did not meet in high school. They met in first grade, which somehow makes the whole thing even more remarkable. They grew up together, attended the same school and the same church, dated through high school, then drifted apart during college when Lauren headed off for a semester abroad in Uganda. They reconnected in 2011 when Lauren returned, began dating that fall, got engaged just six months later, and married on October 12, 2012.

Their story only gets better from there. In 2016, Lauren joined a nonprofit trip back to Uganda, where she met an orphaned baby girl. The couple had been unable to conceive and had been discussing adoption. When Thomas Rhett saw a photo of Lauren holding the baby, he told her they should adopt her. The complicated international adoption process was already underway when Lauren discovered she was pregnant. They completed the adoption of eighteen-month-old Willa Gray in May 2017, and their first biological daughter Ada James was born just three months later. In February 2026, they welcomed their fifth child, son Brave Elijah, joining big sisters Willa Gray, Ada James, Lennon Love, and Lillie Carolina. His Grammy-nominated hit "Die a Happy Man" was written entirely about Lauren, which makes perfect sense when you know the full story. Read his full bio on our website.

Alan Jackson and Denise: The Flight Attendant Who Made His Career

Alan Jackson and Denise met in 1976 while attending Newnan High School in Georgia, where she was a cheerleader, tennis player, and top student. They dated for three years before marrying on December 15, 1979. Alan sang to her at the wedding. He did not yet have a record deal, a Nashville address, or any real plan beyond the dream.

They moved to Nashville eventually, where Alan worked the mailroom at The Nashville Network by day and played honky tonks by night, while Denise took a job as a flight attendant. Then fate intervened in an airport terminal. While working a flight, Denise ran into Glen Campbell, told him about her talented husband, and Campbell handed her the business card of his manager. That connection led to Alan's first publishing deal and ultimately his record contract with Arista Records. Without Denise on that flight, country music history looks different.

The couple separated briefly in 1998 due to Alan's infidelity, but reconciled and rebuilt their marriage. He wrote "Remember When" about their journey together, a song that holds up as one of the most honest love songs in country music. They have three daughters: Mattie, Ali, and Dani. They have now been married for over 46 years. Get all the details on our site.

George Strait and Norma: Fifty-Three Years and Counting

George Strait and Norma Voss grew up together in the small town of Pearsall, Texas, and attended the same high school. They dated briefly, lost touch, and then George had an epiphany. "Norma was the first girl I ever loved," he has said. "I never really even thought anything about her, but then one day I asked her out and we went on a date. We didn't see each other for a long time after that. Then one day, I thought, 'I'm missing the boat here,' and we started dating again."

The two eloped in Mexico on December 4, 1971, when they were both nineteen, then held a small church ceremony back home in Pearsall. George enlisted in the United States Army shortly after, and Norma followed him to his post in Hawaii. They have been inseparable ever since.

Their marriage has not been without heartbreak. The couple lost their thirteen-year-old daughter Jenifer in a car accident in June 1986, a tragedy they have navigated with extraordinary dignity and privacy. They established the Jenifer Strait Memorial Foundation to support children's charities in her memory.

George and Norma recently celebrated over 53 years of marriage. While celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2021, George took the stage in Las Vegas and serenaded Norma with "I Cross My Heart," telling the crowd, "I was 19, and I knew this girl, Norma." The King of Country found his queen in high school and never let her go. Explore more with this full bio video.
