Harold Lloyd Jenkins, a name now largely forgotten by many, was once the performing name of a budding musician. Named after his great-uncle's favorite silent movie actor, Jenkins had been performing on local radio shows and even organized a band called the Cimmarons while in the Army.
However, his manager, Don Seat, believed the artist needed a name with more "star quality." The challenge was to find a name that would be both memorable and unique. The solution came from an unlikely source: a map.
Jenkins famously looked at a map and drew inspiration from two separate towns. He chose "Conway" from Conway, Arkansas, and "Twitty" from Twitty, Texas. With those two simple choices, the stage was set for a country music legend. The name Conway Twitty would go on to grace countless album covers and concert posters, forever etching the star's new identity into music history.
