Happy 50th, Blake Shelton: A Career Rewind on Country Music's Most Entertaining Overachiever

Blake Shelton turns fifty today, and if you told the seventeen-year-old kid who moved from Ada, Oklahoma to Nashville with nothing but a guitar and a dream that half a century later he would have 31 number ones, nine Voice championship seasons, a business empire, and Gwen Stefani, he probably would have laughed you out of the room. And then gone back to working on his songs.

Blake Tollison Shelton was born on June 18, 1976, in Ada, Oklahoma, the son of a beauty salon owner and a car salesman. He grew up obsessed with music, moved to Nashville at seventeen, and spent years grinding before anything clicked. Then, in 2001, it all clicked at once.

The Song That Started Everything

His career began in the early 2000s when he burst onto the country charts with "Austin," a song about a man who never changes his answering machine message hoping his ex will call back. It spent five weeks at number one and announced Shelton as someone worth paying attention to. He has not really stopped collecting number ones since. By 2024 he had added 31 number ones to that debut, putting him in extraordinarily elite company, and still counting. His run includes some of the most beloved country anthems of the past two decades, from "God Gave Me You" to "Sangria" to "I'll Name the Dogs."

The Voice Years

In 2011, Shelton became one of the original coaches on The Voice, and what followed redefined what a country artist could be in the broader American entertainment landscape. He was not just a coach. He was the show's soul, the funny one, the one with the great one-liners, the one who made country music feel accessible to people who had never once tuned into a country radio station. He went on to be the winning coach in nine of the competition's seasons, a record that stands today. He left The Voice in 2023 to focus on being a stepfather to Gwen Stefani's three children. The Love Story Nobody Saw Coming

Shelton began dating Gwen Stefani in 2015, the two having bonded as fellow Voice coaches both navigating painful and high-profile divorces at the same time. What started as mutual understanding turned into something neither of them planned for. He proposed to her at his Oklahoma ranch in October 2020, and they married in July 2021 in a ceremony officiated by Voice host Carson Daly. They have since recorded multiple duets together, including "Nobody but You" and "Purple Irises," and have become one of music's most unlikely and genuinely charming love stories. They rang in 2026 together on his Oklahoma ranch, and by all accounts the couple remains as solid as ever.

The Second Act

Shelton has not slowed down at fifty. In 2024 he signed with BBR Music Group and released a new single "Texas," which earned the largest radio add day of his career. His first album on the new label, For Recreational Use Only, arrived in May 2025 and features guest appearances from Craig Morgan, Gwen Stefani, and Country Music Hall of Famer John Anderson. He also launched his Friends and Heroes 2025 concert tour and is gearing up for a residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

Shelton is also a Grand Ole Opry member, owns the Ole Red bar and restaurant chain with locations in Nashville, Tishomingo, Gatlinburg, and Orlando, and has launched his own production company, Lucky Horseshoe Productions.
