Early Life
Born Sam Lowry Hunt, the eldest of three brothers, he grew up in a middle-class household where his father was an insurance agent and his mother a schoolteacher, and his early years were almost entirely consumed by football, earning a Wendy's High School Heisman nomination and a Georgia Sportswriters Association All-State first-team selection as a quarterback at Cedartown High School. It was only in college, after transferring from Middle Tennessee State University to the University of Alabama at Birmingham, that Hunt picked up a guitar one summer while killing time with a friend, never thinking of himself as a musician until his college mates heard him playing and urged him to take it more seriously.
Career Highlights
After graduating from UAB in 2007, Hunt attended training camp with the Kansas City Chiefs as a free agent but failed to make the roster, and headed to Nashville in 2008 to pursue songwriting, eventually penning Kenny Chesney's "Come Over," Keith Urban's "Cop Car," and Billy Currington's "We Are Tonight" before signing with MCA Nashville in 2014. His debut album "Montevallo," named after his future wife's hometown in Alabama, debuted at number one on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and produced five singles including three consecutive Hot Country Songs number ones, with "Body Like a Back Road" going on to become the longest-running number-one country single in chart history at the time with 34 weeks at the top. His second album "Southside" (2020) debuted at number one as well, was named one of the best albums of the year by The New York Times, and included the Grammy-nominated smash "Body Like a Back Road," cementing his reputation as one of country music's most distinctive voices at the intersection of country, R&B, and hip-hop.
Family & Personal Life
Hunt met Hannah Lee Fowler in 2008 around the time he left for Nashville, named his debut album after her hometown of Montevallo, Alabama, reconciled with her after years apart, proposed during a trip to Israel in January 2017, and married her on April 15, 2017, in an intimate ceremony in his hometown of Cedartown, Georgia. The marriage hit a serious public rupture in February 2022 when Fowler filed for divorce citing "inappropriate marital conduct" and adultery, but she dismissed the filing two months later and the couple went on to welcome three children together: daughter Lucy Louise in May 2022, son Lowry Lee in October 2023, and a third child in May 2025.
