Born Max Winter McNown on July 20, 2001, in West Linn, Oregon, and raised in Bend, Oregon, where he attended Cascade Middle School before his family moved to the Lake Oswego area for high school, McNown grew up surrounded by the Pacific Northwest's forests and lakes in a part of the country with no obvious pipeline to country music stardom, absorbing the landscape and the quietness of outdoor life that would later define his songwriting voice. Music was not a childhood obsession in the traditional sense: he did not pick up guitar until around 2022 at age 20, when he moved to Southern California and began teaching himself chords, quickly discovering that playing at the San Clemente Pier for strangers was the purest possible feedback loop for whether a song was connecting before he had a single follower online.
