Get to Know Koe Wetzel: The East Texas Linebacker Who Became Country Music's Most Unlikely Superstar
By: Brian Zwerner
There are country music artists who were always destined for the stage. And then there is Koe Wetzel, a man who was also briefly destined to tackle quarterbacks, and who took a considerably more bruising road to get where he is today.
Ropyr Madison Koe Wetzel was born on July 14, 1992, in Pittsburg, Texas. Yes, that is his real first name, Ropyr. One of his names is a reference to outlaw country singer-songwriter David Allan Coe, which tells you everything about where this family's priorities were. His mother, Julie Wetzel, was a touring country singer who brought young Koe along on the road, and at just six years old he performed on stage for the first time. His father blasted Tupac Shakur. A cousin introduced him to Nirvana and Soundgarden on road trips. His grandfather played Creedence Clearwater Revival. The result is a musical DNA that no Nashville algorithm could have manufactured.
The Football Chapter
Despite performing on stage at six, music was not always the plan. In high school Koe excelled in sports, playing both football and baseball. He was good enough to earn a spot as a linebacker at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas, a legitimate Division II program. But music never took a backseat. Even with 5AM practices, he stayed up late writing, jamming, and recording.
Then came the ankle injury. It sidelined him for six months, giving him time to reflect. Football passion faded as songwriting grew stronger. In his sophomore year, around 2012, Koe dropped out to go all-in on music. He formed Koe Wetzel and the Konvicts with a childhood friend, self-released a debut EP called Love and Lies, and started playing every Texas bar and dance hall that would have him.
The Decade of Grinding
What followed was nearly a decade of independent hustle that most artists would have quit long before the finish line. Wetzel and his band built a fiercely loyal fanbase across Texas and Oklahoma by playing four nights a week, relentlessly, in every honky-tonk on the circuit. His 2017 independent release Noise Complaint made him a genuine Lone Star State sensation. His 2019 album Harold Saul High went so viral that Columbia Records came calling, and his major-label debut Sellout hit number twelve on the Billboard 200 in 2020. He had built something real before anyone in Nashville handed him anything.
High Road to the Top
Everything changed in late 2024. "High Road," his duet with Jessie Murph, climbed to number one on Billboard's Country Airplay chart in December 2024, marking the first Country Airplay number one for both Wetzel and Murph on their debut entries at the format. The song held the top spot for five consecutive weeks, making it only the sixth debut single since 1990 to lead for that long, and the first ever with two acts both charting for the first time. It has accumulated over 330 million global streams and earned Platinum certification. "This year's been absolutely insane," Wetzel told Billboard. "For Murph and I to get our first number one at country radio on top of everything else feels unreal."
Jaded: A Full Circle Moment
The ink on that number one was barely dry before Wetzel was already working on the next one. On August 7, 2026, Wetzel and Ella Langley released "Jaded," a funky disco two-step tale of two lovers confronting how past heartbreak has left them guarded with each other. The two artists have history that makes the reunion meaningful. Wetzel was one of the first artists to show love to Langley when she was still building her audience in 2022, appearing on "That's Why We Fight," the lead single from her debut EP. Now, with Langley cementing herself as one of the biggest artists of 2026 across all genres, she returns the favor.
"When she delivers a line, you believe it," Wetzel told Rolling Stone. "In 'Jaded,' as she's asking the questions in the chorus, she delivers it with so much care in her voice it draws you in right before it stabs you in the f*cking gut. I love it."
"Jaded" is currently on pace for a Top 25 debut on the Billboard Hot 100, marking the highest debut in this tracking period.
From a six-year-old on his mother's stage in Pittsburg, Texas, to a five-week number one and a viral new duet with the biggest name in country music, Koe Wetzel took the long way around. He would not have it any other way. Read his full bio on our website.
