Idol Told Her No, Then She Formed a Hugely Successful Band
By: Brian Zwerner
Before she was a global superstar with seven Grammy Awards and a pile of No. 1 hits, Hillary Scott was just another teenager with a dream and a plane ticket. Long before the world knew her as the powerhouse lead vocalist of Lady A, she faced a rejection that would have crushed many aspiring artists: American Idol told her "no", not once, but twice.
The "Cattle Call" Heartbreak
In the early 2000s, American Idol was the undisputed gatekeeper of the music industry. Hoping for her big break, a teenage Hillary Scott traveled first to Washington, D.C., and later to San Francisco to audition.
Despite being the daughter of country star Linda Davis, Hillary didn't get any special treatment. In fact, she never even made it to the televised judging rounds. She was cut during the "cattle call" phase by production assistants before she ever had the chance to sing for Simon Cowell or Paula Abdul. Looking back, Scott admits she was "green and inexperienced" and simply crumbled under the pressure.
A Chance Meeting at a Nashville Club
The rejection proved to be a blessing in disguise. Just two years after her failed auditions, shortly after turning 20, Hillary was at a local Nashville music club when she recognized Charles Kelley from his Myspace page. She struck up a conversation, and soon after, she joined Kelley and his school friend Dave Haywood for a songwriting session.
The chemistry was instantaneous. Within months, they had formed Lady Antebellum (now known as Lady A) and were performing in dive bars around Nashville.
From Rejection to Seven Grammys
The trio signed with Capitol Records Nashville in 2007, and their rise was meteoric. Their debut self-titled album made them the first country group to have a debut record enter the charts at No. 1.
By 2010, they released the 12x Platinum smash "Need You Now," which became a global phenomenon, winning four Grammys in a single night. Today, the band is a staple of country radio with 11 No. 1 singles and a legacy as one of the most successful vocal groups of the 21st century. Hillary Scott’s story is the ultimate proof that a "no" from one door is often just a detour to the right one.
